Compare IP results before and after a VPN connection

An unchanged IP or an unexpected location can look like a failed VPN connection. Yet one browser request does not describe every app or protocol. A useful comparison controls the network and address family, then separates observations from conclusions. myIP is an observation tool, not a VPN certification service.

1. Establish a comparable baseline

Use the same device, browser and Wi-Fi or wired connection before and after connecting the VPN. Note both the address family and lookup source for the first observation. A change to mobile data introduces another variable; it is not a controlled before-and-after VPN comparison.

Reopen the page to observe a new connection. myIP personal lookup responses are not shared-cached, but a VPN or browser setting can affect existing connections differently from newly opened ones. Recording the observation time helps distinguish an old screen from a new result. Keep a local note rather than a public record of full addresses.

2. Interpreting changed and unchanged values

A changed address shows that the observed lookup connection used a different external source. A changed country label does not establish the physical location of a VPN server. GeoIP data can reflect provider registration or an exit network rather than the actual device location. Treat the IP and the country as different kinds of evidence.

An unchanged value calls for checking connection state and whether the browser is included. Split tunneling may exclude the browser, and a browser proxy extension can have a different scope from an operating-system VPN. No password or VPN credential needs to be entered into an IP lookup site to perform this comparison.

3. Keep address families and lookup paths separate

IPv4 and IPv6 are different address families and can follow different routing policies. If the first result is IPv4 and the second IPv6, comparing those strings alone does not establish how the VPN handled each family. myIP does not simultaneously measure both addresses or inspect DNS and WebRTC paths.

When same-LAN access needs the external ipify lookup, the page identifies that source. Split-tunnel rules may treat the site domain and ipify domain differently. The external result describes the browser connection to ipify, not a guarantee about every website. Keep this distinction in any report to your VPN provider.

4. A safe check and support workflow

  1. Compare address family and lookup source before and after connection on the same network.
  2. Check browser exclusion rules, connected status and IPv6 support in the VPN settings.
  3. For unexpected results, consult administrator policy or the provider documentation rather than disabling security controls indiscriminately.
  4. Share network type, time, family and only the minimum needed details with support. One IP observation does not prove absence of leaks or complete anonymity.
